Activity: Investigating shapes
Learning opportunity: Observing the way cones, balls, cylinders and cubes move down a slope.
Early Learning Goal: Knowledge and Understanding of the World. Children should investigate objects... by using all of their senses as appropriate and will ask questions about why things happen...
Resources: A selection of 3-d shapes such as cylinders, cubes, cones and spheres; a safe ramp (hill).
Key vocabulary: Cylinder, cone, cube, ball, round, flat, roll, slide, slip, straight.
Organisation: Small group on the floor.
What to do: Introduce children to the hill and the 3-d shapes. Ask whether they know the names of any of the shapes. During the activity, encourage children to use the correct names. Pick up a sphere. Ask children what they think will happen if it is placed at the top of the hill. Choose a child to release the sphere and to describe what happens as it rolls in a straight line. Repeat this with the other shapes, encouraging children to predict what will happen before testing out their ideas. Help children to notice that some shapes will slide and roll depending upon how they are placed on the hill.
Display
Divide a large board into sections and label each from one to ten. Give each child a strip of card with their name written on it and ask them to stick it in the section according to the number of letters in their name. On a table, display the model wells and nearby put up the card wishing wells. Ensure that the card wells are at a height where children can easily lift the roof to look at the wish inside.
